when I was a young man my father he told me

cuz she knows what's right what's good & what's true
& how folks should get along

but that doesn't mean you shouldn't listen to me
when it comes to having fun
he said you're old enough now let's go into town
grab our boys & a six pack of cold ones

as we sat round that old oak table
telling stories & cracking wise
I looked over to my old man
& learned a lesson in being a guy

& in between a hand of gin
papa pulled out a small round tin
with grease for the can that he held in his hand
so he could choke it down into him

now it's been a few years & quite a few beers
& I’ve got sons of my own
they're too young to hork down even a red bull or a six ounce
but one day when they're a little more grown

i'll say do good in school & don't be no fool
mind your ma & don't expect nothing free
but come that old weekend man's gotta have his friends
& they've gotta get a little crazy

& I'll take my boys into town
grab some stone cold aluminum 12 ounce
a deck to play gin & that old rusty tin
with the grease that helps the cans go down

& when it comes time for them to consume
an entire can of ice cold brew
I hope they don't choke
& I hope that their throats
let that whole beer can straight through

I don't have a gun, a bomb or a knife
I just swallowed half a dozen full beer cans
